Nadia who has now had 50 rides has notched up her 3rd win aboard her stable favorite Bulawayo and her first for the Carey Walker Stable.
Both Pat and Harris couldn't be happier with the result, it was great thrill for everyone involved on Sunday at Mornington.
Pat has a great connection with Bulawayo who was bred by Trevor and Terry Delroy, he is out of a mare called Sense in the City which Pat trained early on in her career.&nbsp;
Bulawayo who showed some promise as an early 3yo spent some time away from the stable and is now back in fantastic order.&nbsp;
Nadia rode him with beautiful soft hands and read the race well, not panicking when she had a wall of horses in front of her down the back straight. She let him get into a beautiful rhythm and gave him plenty of room on the turn to race away with a 1.75 length win. The smile on Nadias face said it all.

THE START OF MANY!!

Trainer Pat Carey is known as an astute educator of apprentices, not afraid to deliver the tough advice needed to help his young riders reach their potential.
But his latest new apprentice 18-year-old Nadia Daniels says he&rsquo;s not the strictest taskmaster in the stable. And it isn&rsquo;t his co-trainer Harris Walker either.
It&rsquo;s her long-time friend and Carey&rsquo;s most recent apprentice the talented Celine Gaudray.
&ldquo;I like to say that I&rsquo;m not actually apprenticed to Pat, I&rsquo;m apprenticed to Celine,&rdquo; Daniels said with a laugh. &ldquo;She&rsquo;s tough as nails, very tough on me, but she wants the best for me.
&ldquo;She&rsquo;s a great coach, a great mentor, she&rsquo;s been through the ringer with racing, and she knows all about it.&rdquo;
It was Gaudray who first suggested to Daniels that she should come and work at Carey&rsquo;s yard three years ago.
They&rsquo;d known each other since they were young, and Daniels says she was just happy to get a part-time job.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s a funny story, my family don&rsquo;t come from a racing background let alone horses at all, they wouldn&rsquo;t know what a mane on a horse is.
&ldquo;I asked my mum if I could start riding lessons at 10 years old, I&rsquo;d never really had a true hobby or anything and I just liked the ponies.
&ldquo;I started in a little place in Cranbourne, that&rsquo;s where I met Celine, and when I was 15, she asked if I wanted a job at Pat&rsquo;s, so I called him, and he got me in there straight away.
&ldquo;I started working on the ground there for about a year and learnt all the bits and bobs about racing.
&ldquo;I was very green and raw, I had no idea about racing, I didn&rsquo;t even know how to put a rearing bit on properly.
&ldquo;It was a big adjustment, it&rsquo;s very different from the equestrian background.&rdquo;
Daniels and Gaudray also bonded over similar backgrounds of having parents who grew up overseas and were not connected to the racing industry.
Daniels says her parents have gone through an adjustment as her part-time hobby has now turned into a full-time career after she was accepted into Racing Victoria&rsquo;s prestigious Apprentice Program.
&ldquo;My parents are very Russian and Ukrainian; we all speak Russian at home.
&ldquo;My mum came over here when she was 18 and had me. I like to think I&rsquo;m special because I was the first-born Aussie out of my cousins.
&ldquo;My parents really want to come to a trial. I&rsquo;m yet to bring them, they want to watch me and they&rsquo;re really excited.
&ldquo;They weren&rsquo;t sure about it at first, but now they&rsquo;re pretty stoked about it, they love it.
&ldquo;Celine also came from a background where her family weren&rsquo;t really involved with horses at all, so she understands my position.
&ldquo;She helps me a lot with the mental side of things, she knows this job can be a lot of pressure on someone young like me and she was in that same position.
&ldquo;She&rsquo;s just told me not to take things too personally, be yourself and as long as you work hard, you&rsquo;ll get the results.&rdquo;
She&rsquo;s also told her to keep learning as much as she can off their official bosses and Carey says the 18-year-old, one of the youngest in the latest program intake, has heeded the advice.
&ldquo;She&rsquo;s a good listener, she&rsquo;s focused, and she doesn&rsquo;t switch off from racing as soon work&rsquo;s finished,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;She came into the stable with the expectation that she&rsquo;d just give us a hand for a few weeks or a month or two and learn something and give us a chop out.
&ldquo;Well, here she is today, she&rsquo;s been inducted into the system and has a bright future ahead.&rdquo;
For Daniels, she just can&rsquo;t wait to get to the races, already daring to dream of what could be ahead.
&ldquo;When I first found out I got into the program I was stoked, it was an amazing feeling.
&ldquo;It was a long wait, but we got there in the end and I&rsquo;m really happy to be inducted with a great group of girls and Chris.
&ldquo;It will be really great and I&rsquo;m really excited to start this journey."

MEET NEW APPRENTICE NADIA DANIELS

On Monday at the William Inglis Premier Sale, Pat came home with Lot 48, a stylish, athletic brown Filly by First Season sire OLE KIRK out of Vienna Classic (by Snitzel). This Filly comes from one of the strongest winning families in the Studbook. Whilst OLE KIRK is a First Season sire, this Filly is very much in the mould of a Snitzel with lovely scope and super- athletic proportions. The purchase price was 40k plus the usual incidentals (insurance etc.) Our policy is to review the overheads monthly until this Filly is fully sold.

ATHLETIC BROWN FILLY BY FIRST SEASON SIRE OLE KIRK OUT OF VIENNA CLASSIC (BY SNITZEL)

Harris Walker and Pat Carey will see how Maputo runs in the 2800-metre Listed VRC St Leger at Flemington on Anzac Day before deciding if the gelding pushes on to the Group 1 South Australian Derby.
The son of British stallion Crowded House has raced just four times, but has already displayed good staying ability, breaking his maiden impressively over 2000m at Pakenham two runs ago as a $41 chance.
And despite looking in trouble around the bend at his most recent start, Maputo flattened out to hit the line superbly in the Listed 2400-metre Galilee Series Final at Caulfield, just over four lengths behind winner Gold Wolf.
With these runs under his belt, Walker is excited to see what the progressive three-year-old can do with an extra two furlongs and on a much bigger track.
&ldquo;He got a little bit lost between runners there at Caulfield, but once he got into clean running, he savaged the line,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;He really earmarked himself as a horse that would one, enjoy Flemington, and two, enjoy the 2800m.
&ldquo;Physically, he&rsquo;s always been quite mature, but mentally he just lacked a bit of race-day experience. In each run, he&rsquo;s shown progression, especially after his maiden win.
&ldquo;He&rsquo;s really come on from there, he&rsquo;s quite professional now &ndash; he does his work, he knows what he&rsquo;s doing and he really savages that line.&rdquo;

With Maputo&nbsp;still in his first racing preparation, Walker and Carey are prepared for things to tail off with every subsequent run.
But on the flipside, another strong performance could see him set for the $1 million SA Derby, to be run on May 4.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;ll let Thursday guide us, being a three-year-old and in his first campaign, it could all come to an end,&rdquo; Walker said.
&ldquo;But he could also come through and thrive and, in that case, there&rsquo;s races like the SA Derby that would suit him to a tee.
&ldquo;He&rsquo;ll have to come through the race on Thursday in good order, but hopefully he runs quite well and quite forward and then he can steamroll into Adelaide.&rdquo;
Maputo isn&rsquo;t the only SA Derby contender in the yard, with fellow Crowded House offspring Zakouma also nominated for the feature.
Zakouma ran a very different but equally gutsy race in the Galilee Final, sticking on gamely from on the speed to finish fourth, two lengths ahead of his stablemate.
Walker said the gelding has been in fine order since and after matching motors with Maputo in a gallop on Tuesday morning, could also be G1-bound in the coming weeks, though this is by no means a certainty.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re not too sure where he&rsquo;s going to go yet, he does also hold a nomination for the SA Derby,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;But we&rsquo;ll just see how he comes through his gallop this morning, the pair of them worked on the course proper at Mornington and he was just as good as Maputo.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;ll make an assessment over the next few days and figure out whether he goes to the races again or to the paddock.
&ldquo;Physically, he&rsquo;s just a little bit lighter on than Maputo, so it&rsquo;s just going to be a gallop-by-gallop case with him.&rdquo;

ST LEGER TO SA DERBY FOR MAPUTO?

The Pat Carey and Harris Walker-trained&nbsp;Diamond Decorator&nbsp;(Toronado {Ire}) ran her rivals into the ground at Caulfield on Saturday, with a well-executed ride by Beau Mertens over 1200m. The $21 outsider defeated&nbsp;Lost&nbsp;(Exceed And Excel) and&nbsp;Barby&rsquo;s Doll&nbsp;(Fighting Sun).

The 3-year-old filly is the first foal from the&nbsp;Hinchinbrook&nbsp;mare&nbsp;Tuskar Brook, also trained by Pat Carey, who won four races. The same group of owners then purchased Diamond Decorator as a Weanling.

DIAMOND DECORATOR TOO GOOD IN RACE 1 AT CAULFIELD 3/2/24

Pat Carey thought the Galilee Series Final (2400m) at Caulfield would be a nice race to gauge the ability of his two lightly raced gallopers, Maputo and Zakouma, but he wasn&rsquo;t prepared for how big a test it will be on Saturday.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s usually a race where horses coming through the grades meet, but that race has held up much stronger than previous years,&rdquo; Carey said.
&ldquo;You&rsquo;ve got an Alister Clark Stakes winner in Antrim Coast and a Victoria Derby runner-up in Apulia,&rdquo; Carey said.
&ldquo;I think it&rsquo;s a very strong edition and it&rsquo;s going to be a good measuring stick to see how far my pair have come.&rdquo;
Carey added that with races such as the VRC St Leger and South Australian Derby coming up, he and co-trainer Harris Walker will know where the pair fit into the equation following Saturday.
&ldquo;We will be in a position to find out precisely where they sit as this is a good field of three-year-old stayers,&rdquo; he said.
Carey&rsquo;s forte over his career has been as a trainer of stayers, with four Group 1 wins coming in races held over 2400-2500m.
Both of his gallopers are by Crowded House and have had only three starts each and Carey said he had expected improvement from Maputo ahead of his third start, when he was ultimately successful in a Pakenham maiden over 1600 metres after starting at $41.
&ldquo;He&rsquo;s been a bit of a backward horse, but he came on well from his first two starts and I like the way he went about his business last start. He was quite impressive and he was still doing things wrong, but he was able to get away with it,&rdquo; Carey said.
&ldquo;After his second start, Ethan Brown said he had a bit of improvement to come and might end up going somewhere.&rdquo;

HUGE TEST FOR CAREY’S YOUNG STAYERS

You never know where the friendships forged in your school days will take you.
For new trainer Harris Walker, a friendship he formed in his junior years has led to his current career in the racing industry.
&ldquo;Probably about 15 years ago, I became mates with the Hayes when they came over from Hong Kong,&rdquo; Walker said.
&ldquo;They got me involved in racing; I had no family history at all.
&ldquo;They grew the seed and then from there I just really wanted to learn more about it and then obviously got involved and I really haven&rsquo;t stopped since then.&rdquo;
Walker then took the next step in his racing journey by working for Cox Plate-winning trainer Colin Little at his Caulfield stables near where he grew up.
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s no university or textbook of racing, so it&rsquo;s important to find a mentor like Colin who&rsquo;s willing, not only to pass on his experiences, but allow you to grow within his team,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve been fortunate throughout my whole journey to find myself good mentors who are willing to invest in me and that&rsquo;s helped me develop and become I guess, the horse trainer that I am today.&rdquo;
After working for Little and completing a stint with Lindsay Park, Walker then found his next mentor in multiple G1-winning trainer Pat Carey.
The Mornington-based trainer was someone who he had admired from afar and who he was put in contact with through their mutual connection, former jockey and Lindsay Park&rsquo;s chief operating officer Matt Pumpa.
&ldquo;Pat was always someone that I&rsquo;d looked at and really respected his horsemanship, especially how he trains stayers,&rdquo; Walker said.
Walker and Carey&rsquo;s professional relationship quickly developed, with the pair joining forces as a training partnership at the start of this month.
For Carey, the union has come at the right stage of life for him and his wife Cheryl.
&ldquo;I just felt that as myself and Cheryl are starting to move on a bit, I need to have a better presence on the front line,&rdquo; Carey said.
&ldquo;In Harris Walker, I&rsquo;ve got a very presentable young guy who&rsquo;s really keen to do well.
&ldquo;What I saw in Harris was a conscientious, quiet guy who&rsquo;s thirsty for knowledge and to learn. He&rsquo;s got a very good rapport with the staff; the staff really like him.&rdquo;

Already, Walker has soaked up knowledge that Carey has gained in his career and believes that the partnership is off to a good start.
&ldquo;A lot of what I&rsquo;m learning is stuff that I haven&rsquo;t seen before and that&rsquo;s the thing; Pat&rsquo;s got experience and he&rsquo;s willing to show me that experience and what&rsquo;s he&rsquo;s learned along his journey,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;I think we work quite well together, obviously his old and experienced mind and my enthusiasm, I guess you could say, it&rsquo;s working well together so far.&rdquo;
Carey and Walker had their first runners together at Sale on the second day of the season and then celebrated their first win together when Starlight Scope got the prize in a mares race at Flemington.
&ldquo;I was quite disappointed we couldn&rsquo;t get a result there (Sale), but I&rsquo;m glad we waited four days and we were able to do it at Headquarters,&rdquo; Walker reflected of that moment.
&ldquo;You wouldn&rsquo;t read about it, you wouldn&rsquo;t write a book about it, it simply doesn&rsquo;t happen.
&ldquo;For it to happen was just great and to share it with Pat was an unbelievable thrill.&rdquo;
So, what does the future look like for the senior trainer and his protege?
&ldquo;Harris comes in and the way I see it, he develops his name and his position in the industry further, and who knows, eventually, instead of me sitting in the front seat, I might sit in the back seat and he might sit in the front seat,&rdquo; Carey replied.
&ldquo;Hopefully, it just continues to grow and develop and we keep getting winners, we keep turning out horses in good condition and that&rsquo;s all we can really focus on, is getting the best out of our horses and if we can do that, we&rsquo;re just going to get more and more winners and hopefully, that can continue,&rdquo; Walker said.

WALKER’S PATH TO THE TRAINING RANKS

A new era commenced at Sale on Wednesday, with Harris Walker&rsquo;s name joining Pat Carey&rsquo;s in the formbook for the first time as co-trainer.
And it was almost a dream start for the Mornington-based duo, as Cumbrian Queen ($2.70) kicked clear and nearly clinched the fourth event on the new partnership&rsquo;s first day at the races.
The four-year-old mare was just run down by Donatien Alphonse ($31) in the shadows of the post, but the result will do little to dim the air of optimism around the stable.
Walker spoke before the first on Wednesday, which featured the pair&rsquo;s first two runners, and said he felt more eager than nervous as he commences his training career.
&ldquo;There&rsquo;s excitement in the air and I think that&rsquo;s shared between the whole team there at Epsom Lodge,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;re looking forward to it.&rdquo;

Whilst the partnership has been 10 months in the works, it was a &lsquo;sliding-doors moment&rsquo; that originally brought Walker and Carey together.
&ldquo;We sort of came across each other unintentionally, a partnership was something we both were looking for at different stages of our career,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;Working with Pat&rsquo;s been great &ndash; it&rsquo;s been interesting, I scratch my head a lot of the time.
&ldquo;But we&rsquo;re getting along well and he&rsquo;s a great horseman &hellip; I&rsquo;m very happy with where I am and having a mentor like Pat moving forward.&rdquo;
A five-time Group 1 winner as a solo trainer, Carey alluded to the move in an interview at Sandown in July, saying he was &lsquo;happy to promote him (Walker) as the future&rsquo;.
The pair&rsquo;s next runner will be its first in the city, as Starlight Scope will line up in the Benchmark 84 Jennifer Lefebvre Trophy at Flemington on Saturday.
